BPA-Free and Shelf-Stable: Food-Contact Compliance for PET Cake Cans in 2026

Bakery packaging is no longer just a procurement decision — it’s a compliance one. Fresh cakes are among the hardest foods to package: cream and icing deform under pressure, sugar finishes shift, and moisture loss changes texture within hours. The container has to protect and satisfy tightening food-contact law. Here’s where 2026 stands.

The Rule That Changed Everything

EU Regulation 2024/3190, in force since January 2025, prohibits Bisphenol A (BPA) in food-contact plastics, coatings, and inks. That reaches deep into packaging: a can body, its lining, and even the printing on the label all fall under the ban. Any bakery supplying the EU must be able to certify its containers are BPA-free across every component.

In the United States, FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 defines the safety requirements for food-grade polyolefins, and PET used for food contact is governed by its own favorable status. The practical takeaway is the same on both sides of the Atlantic: verify the resin, the lining, and the print.

What a Compliant PET Cake Can Looks Like

When you source cans for fresh cakes, confirm four things in writing:

  1. Food-grade PET resin — documented for direct food contact.
  2. BPA-free across body, lid, and any coating or ink.
  3. Seal integrity — a tamper-evident closure that keeps the cream layer safe in transit and on shelf.
  4. Certifications — FDA, EU, and third-party marks (e.g., SGS) that your buyers’ auditors will ask for.

The tamper-evident packaging segment is expanding from $2.56 billion in 2025 to $4.26 billion by 2030 (10.72% CAGR) — proof that secure, verifiable closure is now a buying criterion, not a bonus.

Shelf Life Still Depends on the Recipe

Compliance keeps the can legal; the recipe keeps the cake safe. A PET can extends refrigerated shelf life to roughly 7–14 days for fresh cakes, but only when:

  • Moisture is tuned so the crumb doesn’t weep into the filling.
  • Cold chain is maintained from fill to shelf.
  • Fill levels leave headspace so the lid seal isn’t stressed.

Canning buys you days instead of hours. It does not remove refrigeration.

A Note on Volume

China exported $1.28 billion in baked goods in 2024, a reminder of how much cake moves through international supply chains — and how much compliant primary packaging travels with it. If you export, your container’s paperwork matters as much as its performance.
